SUBMISSION: THE PATH TO GODLY AUTHORITY
“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7 NKJV
God has an amazing plan and purpose for every believer, but walking in that plan requires a heart that is yielded to Him. Submission is not weakness, bondage, or the loss of freedom. True submission to God brings true freedom. It is an attitude of the heart that says, “Lord, not my will, but Your will be done.”
Submission Comes Before Authority
Jesus is our greatest example. He lived in complete submission to the Father, doing what the Father instructed Him to do. Because He humbled Himself and submitted even unto death, He was exalted. The principle is powerful: the way to greater spiritual authority is greater submission to God.
We see this again in James 4:7: “Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” Notice the order. Submission comes first, then resistance. When we submit ourselves to God’s authority, we are positioned to exercise the authority He has given us.
What Does It Mean to Submit to God?
Submission begins with God’s Word. His Word becomes the final authority for how we think, speak, live, and make decisions. We don’t change the Word to fit our lives; we allow our lives to change to line up with the Word.
Submission also means being led by the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:14 says, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” God desires for us to mature spiritually, learning to recognize His leadership and respond with obedience.
We must also recognize and honor the godly authority God places in our lives. God is a God of order, not confusion. Humility allows us to receive correction, instruction, and wisdom and to grow through the relationships God has given us.
Humility Positions You for Promotion
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” — James 4:10 NKJV
We don’t have to promote ourselves. Our responsibility is to remain faithful, humble, obedient, and submitted. Promotion brings greater responsibility and accountability, and God looks for people He can trust. Kingdom authority is never about being served; it is about serving others.
David demonstrated this beautifully. Before anyone saw him defeat Goliath, God saw his faithfulness when nobody was watching. He faithfully cared for his father’s sheep and defeated the lion and the bear in private. Private victories prepared David for public victories.
A Heart Fully Yielded
God is looking for men and women who will say, “Not my will, but Your will.” Submission is a daily choice to surrender our plans, attitudes, desires, time, gifts, and future to Him.
Ask yourself: Is there any area of my life that I have not fully submitted to God? Allow the Holy Spirit to search your heart. Surrender every area to Him and trust Him to lead you into everything He has prepared for you. Submission is not weakness, it is strength. As we submit to God, we position ourselves to walk in freedom, spiritual authority, growth, and the fulfillment of His purpose for our lives.
